RESIDENCY: Ayumi Goto
Studio Project is happy to announce our collaboration with artist, writer and performer Ayumi Goto, as she conducts a digital residency while traveling throughout the world. These personal and performative gestures have no obligation other than to share as Studio Project supports artist-run initiatives and contemporary thinkers in the arts.
Ayumi Goto bio
I explore the world through performance, where the body works with and through worlds that are encountered. I swallow the worlds in as much as they devour me. As an embodied, diasporic artist and thinker, I draw upon the writings of Neo-Buddhist modernist philosopher, Nishida Kitarō, who articulated thinking as an outcome of the lived body. Just like one's sweat, tears, skin, blood, and faeces, thought is a secondary characteristic of the body in motion rather than being a prime mover. We breathe/live/act therefore we are...together. Raised in a pan-Asian, multi-directional, multi-linguistic diasporic setting, I was taught that gestures speak more loudly than words and that we live with one another in variegated states of impermanence. It is of utmost importance to me that these temporary engagements are encased by love eternal and that within these segmented interactions, no one is ever left behind. I am fascinated by place-based, temporal and spatial shape-shifting, and how these transformations might expand our understanding of health and disease. Health in this case is not restricted to humans but is a comprehensive encompassing of human and nonhuman interrelations. I work in collaboration with human, nonhuman, dreams, and hope.
